Through a number of programs, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is actively encouraging environmentally friendly shipping throughout the Caribbean. Notably, in July 2024, the IMO conducted a regional workshop with the aim of putting its 2023 Strategy on lowering ship-generated greenhouse gas emissions into practice.

Key maritime players from the Caribbean region came together for this workshop to talk about the prospects and challenges of decarbonizing the marine sector, with a focus on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
Additionally, the IMO is in favor of the creation of "green corridors," which are particular maritime lanes reserved for ships with zero emissions. These programs are a part of a larger endeavor to promote environmentally friendly marine practices, improve port facilities, and increase the area's ability to accept new technology and alternative fuels.
The Caribbean region presents distinct environmental obstacles and relies heavily on maritime transportation for economic growth, making these endeavors imperative.
